The Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Tariana Turia has today announced the appointment of Judith Stanway and Kenneth Williams to the Board of the Charities Commission.
Ms Stanway and Mr Williams replace outgoing members Judith Timpany and Ian Calder. The Minister has also reappointed Frank Claridge to the Board of the Commission for a further term.
Mental Health
The Mental Health Foundation and Suicide Prevention Information New Zealand (SPINZ) recognise the importance of drawing attention to such a significant public health concern as suicide through the use of statistics. However, it is important for people to be aware that the information released today by the Chief Coroner is provisional as it is yet to be officially published by the Ministry of Health.
Increasing differences in life expectancy between high and low income groups since the early 1980s provide evidence of the impact of social determinants, such as income, on inequalities in health in New Zealand, according to latest research from the University of Otago, Wellington.

Maori would experience significant gains in life expectancy of about five years, and non-Maori three years, if tobacco sales were ended by 2020 and the gains projected to 2040, according to latest research from the University of Otago, Wellington.
Children are being diagnosed with hearing loss much earlier than before thanks to the rollout of newborn hearing screening across the country this year. Previously the average age of finding out a child in NZ had a hearing loss was 45 months but now it can be within days of birth.

A forum focusing upon the teaching of diversity issues and whether or not we should be discussing diversity in our schools and with our students is being hosted by the NZ National Commission for UNESCO as part of the NZ Diversity Action Forum 2010 in Christchurch this month.
