Centre closure bad news for teens

Closure of the 198 Youth Health Centre in Christchurch is bad news for the city's young people and surprising in light of a positive evaluation from the Ministry of Health late last year on the effectiveness of youth health services, Family Planning National Medical Advisor Dr Christine Roke says.

Raising Awareness

Kidney Health New Zealand mark World Kidney Day

Staff from Kidney Health New Zealand marked World Kidney Day yesterday with a successful event giving free kidney health checks, advice and information in Cannons Creek, Porirua. The effort is in response to significantly higher rates of diabetes and related kidney disease among Maori, Asian and Pacific peoples, compared to other New Zealanders.

Similar free services will be available at other events, such as an upcoming Pacific festival in Auckland. To boost awareness of the rapid growth in kidney disease, especially among Maori and Pacific populations, KHNZ will offer similar checks to MPs and staff at Parliament on 16 March. Kidney Health New Zealand is supported in these efforts by Diabetes New Zealand.

One man, one road, one cycle for asthma control

Roger Honeybun is cycling more than 1,000 kilometres from Christchurch to Auckland to raise awareness of poor asthma control in New Zealand. Roger's great nephew, Sean Hedley, tragically died from an exacerbation of asthma at just nine years old.

Tobacco industry needs to be honest

"The tobacco industry should support an effective tobacco licensing system and stop proposing largely meaningless changes to the existing rules which are very ineffective," says the Asthma Foundation's Chief Executive, Jane Patterson.

Fourth Vulnerability Report: Tax changes need to focus on children

"Tax reforms must address the issue of child poverty and make low income families better off", said Shaun Robinson, the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services (NZCCSS) President. "A reform of the tax system should focus on ensuring all New Zealand children have a reasonable start. The fact that more than 1 in 5, of our children are growing up in poverty is not only unjust but will undermine our future economic competitiveness as a nation. The children of today need to be the skilled workers of tomorrow. If 1 in 5 have had their education, health and ability to be part of our communities damaged by poverty then that is a huge issue for every New Zealander" said Mr Robinson.

Labour Party MPs are currently touring the country in the "Axe the Tax" bus opposing the National government's plans to raise GST from 12.5% to 15%.

A dynamic new research centre for the social service sector!

The Heart Foundation is calling for the government to take bold action to prevent Maori dying prematurely from tobacco related illnesses. The call comes as submissions on the Maori Affairs Inquiry into the Tobacco Industry in Aotearoa and the Consequences of Tobacco Use for Maori are being heard this week. Heart Foundation Medical Director Professor Norman Sharpe says life expectancy for Maori is on average ten years less than Pakeha.

Smoking a key risk factor for Maori oral health - Dental Association

Tobacco use significantly increases the risk of oral cancer and the demand for oral health care, and Maori are among the worst hit, says the New Zealand Dental Association. Associate Director Graeme Ting said the increased need for health care has a flow on effect for smokers, a great proportion of whom are Maori, and that higher demands for general health care, had an economic impact on both smokers and the health system.

Top Stories

Chief Ombudsmen to Address Residents Association Conference

Chief Ombudsman Beverley Wakem will provide the keynote address to a gathering of residents' association representatives at a conference in parliament next month. Spokesman for the Residents 2010 Conference, Tom Law, says Ms Wakem's presence at the conference adds considerable cachet to the event. "The work of residents' associations is becoming more important as society fragments due to social and technological changes," says Mr Law, "Residents' associations are at the heart of many communities, providing informal coordination and support to citizens."

On fresh evidence about the gender pay gap

An appropriate newsflash yesterday for International Women's Day. After analyzing Inland Revenue data, the Women's Ministry has found that women almost immediately begin to be paid less than men who have the same tertiary education qualifications. That gender pay gap starts at 6% on average after the first year in the workplace, and reaches 20% in some professions. So much for the encouraging data, NZUSA women's rights officer Sophie Blair pointed to yesterday about the trend of high participation rates by women in tertiary education. While welcome, that rise in participation also seems to be producing a more highly qualified supply of female workers who cost less to employ.

Minister accepts Eisenhower Fellowship

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett announces she has accepted an Eisenhower Fellowship for the Women's Leadership Programme 2010. The prestigious six week Fellowship was awarded to only 20 women around the world who were identified as outstanding leaders.
